2/27 Investigation

This week I did my investigation on audio and sound effects for movies and films. Sound effects are used to enhance the quality and auditory experience of the movie. It is sometimes difficult to find a good sound effect from a pre-recorded soundbank to imitate an object in the movie, which is why foley artists are mainly in charge of creating the sound effects that we hear in movies today.

One of the coolest jobs in the film industry that requires a deep knowledge of sound, music, and  rhythm belongs to artists in charge of "Foley." Sound is extremely important in creating an immersive experience for the viewers. A foley artist is someone who recreates sounds for film, video, and other media in post-production to enhance the audio quality. They replace sounds that can not be properly recorded on set, things such as the swishing of clothing, the breaking of glass, or footsteps. They use a variety of props to create specific sounds, for example, footsteps are created by the artist tapping some type of shoe on a surface like wood or concrete.

In this video, Marko Costanzo walks us through the behind the scenes of how he made the sound effects for some of the movies that he has worked on. In the video, you can see that he mainly uses objects to mimic the sounds and rarely ever uses his voice.

When I went to research for more ways on how to create sound effect, I found a video of a person putting a collage of videos together to make one sound:

This video is something closer to what I would use in my project because it is based off of a horror game. The person uses a collection of various instruments and objects to imitate the horrific noise.

Another video that I saw was this video of people showing how to create foley sound effects:

This video is helpful to me because before seeing this, I had no idea how I could recreate the horror sound effects since I did not have the amount of equipment like the previous person. However, this video shows you how to create sound effects with things that people probably already have at home, such as a plastic straw and cup, and a fruit. I am not sure what types of sound I want to incorporate in my video yet, but I will definitely use this tutorial to guide me through the way.
